Create A Data Dance
The following are prompts to guide you in creating your own Data Dance. Past Data Dances have been represented through maps and/or movements. A visual guide is also available below as a PDF.
Creation
What is in your data collection? Pick a piece of your data to track. How was your data created? What does your data look like? Is your data tangible? Does it bring a feeling of weight? How long does your data live?
Influence
The push of a button. A voice command. A gust of wind. A chemical reaction. Who and what influences your data to move? What elements are involved? What does your data do?
Migration
Are you curious to explore where your data goes? Start to finish, where does your data begin, go, and end? What is your data’s pathway? Can we take a walking or driving tour or your data’s pathway? Whose pathway does it cross?
Value
Along its path, ask and investigate who controls the use and value of your data. Who are all the companies and people who benefit from the use of your data? Does your data tell a story of who or what used it? Does it make you happy, laugh, scared, or cry?
ReProduction
Does your data change along the way? What changed? Context? Situation? Players? Stakeholders? What was the effect? Did it change the pathway? Does it reflect the “telephone game” where in the end, the original content becomes jumbled through translation? Does your data become unrecognizable? Can your data be traced back to you?
